Iran's deputy trade minister killed

  • Deputy trade minister shot in car in Tehran square

  • Assailant may have been speaking with victim

(CNN) — Iran’s deputy trade minister was assassinated in his car in Tehran Sunday night, the government’s news agency said.

Safdar Rahmatabadi was shot in the chest and head by an unidentified assailant in Sabalan Square, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The IRNA quoted a police officer at the scene as saying two shell casings were found inside the car, so “the terrorist had most probably been talking with Mr. Rahmatabadi.”

Rahmatabadi was deputy minister of industries, mines and trade.

Samuel Santamaria contributed to this report.
